Actinic Keratoses are commonly referred to as pre-cancerous lesions. They can be felt as rough, flesh-colored small areas of skin that are not easily removed with washing or rubbing. A percentage of these growths have the potential of further developing into skin cancer. For this reason, it is important to have them treated. A large majority of AK lesions grow on sun exposed areas, such as the face, neck, and arms. However, they can develop anywhere a person has sustained constant sun exposure.

They are easily treated if caught early. Treatments include cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen), topical medicines, chemical peels and physical removal (curettage).

People with a history of constant sun exposure will often develop recurrent outbreaks of these lesions. Regular skin checks with your dermatologist are very important.
